Venice: A City on the Brink
Often regarded as the most unique and precious of all cities in the world, Venice now finds itself at the forefront of an ecological disaster driven by climate change. The city’s remarkable beauty and historical significance are increasingly endangered as rising sea levels, acidification and environmental challenges threaten the ecosystem of the Venice Lagoon and stability of the city itself.
The Symbolism of Benthic Foraminifera Sculptures:
Responding to this urgent reality are three abstract sculptures inspired by Benthic Foraminifera – miscroscopic organisms known as Forams. Forams, whose intricate shells contribute to the formation of limestone from which Venice is largely built, serve as a poignant reminder of what is at stake. Venetian authorities monitor these organisms to inform them of the health of the Venice Lagoon. Scientists predict that by the end of this century, these miniscule creatures will become extinct and tragically so will Venice itself. Through these sculptures, the unseen becomes visible; a reminder to the interdependence between marine ecosystems and the future of Venice.
