Although abstract, these works echo undercurrents of Day’s favourite haunts – beach promenades, David Jones, Circular Quay, the Fish Markets and cafes. Reflecting Day’s love of populated lively spaces, these works resonate with the joie de vivre that often fills Picasso’s paintings, which Day admires. One can see snippets of Picasso’s later works executed in the South of France as well as the influence of Australia’s great ‘popster’, Ken Reinhard.’
Some of these precious offerings are redolent with the aromas of coffee and barbequed squid while others evoke the sounds of splashing water and cheerful kids.
